In the 2001 French Grand Prix, held at the Magny-Cours circuit on 1 July, the Ferrari driven by Rubens Barrichello, started from eighth position and, despite a three-stop strategy that initially penalised him, got the third step of the podium.
Michael Schumacher won the GP with Ferrari, further consolidating his lead in the world championship. Starting from second on the grid, behind his brother Ralf Schumacher in the Williams, Michael managed to overtake his brother during the race and control the situation until the chequered flag, taking his fiftieth victory in Formula 1.
