The 2001 Monza race was a special event, with a minute's silence observed before the start in memory of the victims of the September 11 attacks on the Twin Towers in New York, and a general atmosphere of mourning and reflection that could be felt in the paddock and among the spectators. To commemorate the victims, the two F2001s were banded in black with an entirely black nose.
Rubens Barrichello had a very combative 2001 Italian Grand Prix, starting from fourth on the grid in his Ferrari. In the closing stages of the race, Barrichello launched a chase down Montoya, but the Colombian Williams driver managed to defend the lead.
